What is a lift in volleyball?

A lift in volleyball is a violation that occurs when a player makes contact with the ball in a manner that is against the rules. This often happens when a player uses an open hand to catch and then throw the ball, rather than hitting it cleanly with a spiking motion. A lift can also occur when a player holds the ball for too long, delaying the hit.

When a lift is called, the opposing team is awarded a point and possession of the ball. Lifts are typically called by the referee or an official, but players may also self-call a lift if they are aware of their own violation.

To avoid committing a lift in volleyball, players should focus on using proper technique when hitting the ball, such as making clean contact with their hands and avoiding excessive holding or carrying of the ball. Practicing good hand-eye coordination and timing can also help prevent lifts from occurring during gameplay.
